This might be better for /r/frugal but some people seemed to respond well to this comment so I thought I would start a thread about it to foster discussion.

We do a month of tight basic livin each year to save and detox. Whether it's simple or not (as always) is up for debate.

Our 3 rules:

  1. No food you haven't made yourself. This is a great rule because it covers no takeout, no dine out, no shitty frozen food. But it also leaves it open to interpretation so you can make fun stuff which means it's nothing like a diet month or some crap like that. Bake cookies or something!
  2. No booze of any kind, even if it's in the house, this is a good rule because it combines a shitty month with a detox. I also originally included this because I would have friends offer to buy me a beer to convince me to pop into the pub. Sneaky bastards!
  3. No purchases apart from groceries. This is up for debate and is more to keep me off amazon, buying a new game or starting costly projects while I haven't finished others. Also prevents holidays as we like to travel.

It's a great lead up to Christmas, pay off your credit card debts that accumulate over a summer of fun, as well as detox from too many patio beers.

For us the key ingredient to pulling this off is timing having a fairly large community of friends and being outgoing and adventurous people. November is shitty weather here with very few get togethers with friends we have to avoid. We run it from the day after the last Halloween party until the night of the first work Christmas party so it usually gives runs 4 - 6 weeks depending. Choose your month wisely, but obviously there's bonus points if you can make it punny.

Afterwards we feel great, health-wise, money-wise, head-space..t. My partner is even doing a 30 day fitness challenge while I am busy baking up a storm and starting projects I've been putting off.

Hopefully someone who likes the idea of simplistic living but has the problem of wanting to do EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME gets something out of this post.
