This isn’t a new deal, as I found it a few days ago when this post was made regarding a coupon code on END clothing https://www.reddit.com/r/frugalmalefashion/comments/dzionl/end_clothing_20_off_some_items_with_code_early/ Feel free to credit the original author for the effort.

I’m posting this with some thoughts about the Sapper, as I was able to try it out at a Macy’s before making the order. This is also a comparison with Ashby, which I also owned for about a year. I know this sub has die-hard fans for the Ashby, but I wanted to point out this model as an alternative.

  1. The design is based on the field jacket. I personally prefer this look to the Ashby/Bedale/Beaufort as it looks a lot better for the city dwellers. Also works great if your city is somewhat already saturated with Ashby’s.

  2. Another plus is that it has a concealed hood. I’ve always thought it was strange to have waterproof jackets like Barbour that don’t come with a hood. I’ve owned the Ashby and the attached hood, and the hood felt very clumsy to use. BTW, the concealed hood for the olive version is a different color that looks kind of weird. The hood is NOT waxed cotton, just simple polyester crap, but should work fine for light drizzle... and can probably treat with a DWR finish if you really want to make it work against the elements.

  3. Sizing. Classic fit. I usually wear a medium, chest size 37-38, and a small gives a slim fit, not too tight across the chest. The shoulder areas in the back have gussets that allow for more range of motion. I can fit a fleece underneath comfortably. You can, of course, go with your regular size to get more layers underneath. It has cinch cords at the mid waist level to make that area tighter.

  4. Warmer than the Ashby, though being warmer has its own pros (warmer) and cons (can’t really wear it during high 50s like an Ashby). More suited for the late fall/early winter times. With proper layering, you can probably take this down to the high 20’s and low 30’s, but I don’t think it’s a great idea to have waxed cotton be exposed to that much cold consistently.

  5. The collar is better at protecting against the wind than the Ashby based on how it wraps around.

  6. Black or Olive. Up to you, I think black actually looks better but the olive can be versatile like the Ashby olive. From someone who has been selling Barbour for years: For what it’s worth, having sold Barbour since the 1980s my customers usually stick to olive for the country and black for urban wear. Depending upon your complexion; black can make some people look washed out. 7. No slash pockets, either at the chest or beneath the lower side pockets. This is a major difference compared to the Ashby, which has the slash pockets.

In summary, I think the Sapper is a fantastic option for those looking for a new Barbour look. Hope this was somewhat useful. I had trouble finding enough reviews on the Sapper, so now that I have one, I thought I would share these thoughts.
