I am a recent addition to the community of r/frugal. Thanks for having me.

I try to not use any plastic for storing, serving, heating, freezing my food. The reason I don't use plastic is because "microwave, dishwasher safe," plastic isn't always safer than other plastics. For some heat resistant plastics the only rule is that when heated they do not deform or melt but that doesn't mean they don't off gas or leech toxins or VOC's (volatile organic compounds).

If you have taken the time to look at a plastic bowl or typically most plastic things you can see a weird triangle with a number or letters. These identify the type of plastic and if it is recyclable. What kind of plastic is it? This can help you understand what plastics work or won't work in the situation.

Some items over the years I have tested and found that their protective coatings fail after time but when did they fail? How much plastic have I been adding to my daily meals? These questions concern me. I have changed my cooking habits and no longer use these items when deal with hot or freezing foods (Plastic tongs, spatulas, forks, spoons, knives, plastic cups, straws, microwave bowls, freezer safe bags (aluminum foil or glass tupperware are good alternatives), nylon coated utensils, and styrofoam containers... and much more.

Feel free to comment more ideas or thoughts about alternatives to plastics in the kitchen.
