I've seen this type of post before, but figured I'd post my own, so I could get some insight around my specific numbers.

My situation: I'm currently renting a room because I'm finishing a respiratory degree program that will run 21 months. I just need something to get me to work and school for 21 months, so, not necessarily concerned with min-maxing and performing optimally, just need to get through this program. Public transit doesn't go to my job.

The car: 2000 Toyota Sienna minivan. 155k miles. I've taken it to 3 places, and gotten conflicting opinions on what's wrong/most important. Also, I agree that it's great and fulfilling to do your own repairs, but I'm a noob and absolutely cannot afford to screw something up on the car.

Repairs needed: Power steering pump, rack & pinion are leaking. Approx cost to repair the whole system is about $1500

Front CV axle: About $350

Bushings on control arm are coming apart: about $900

Front struts leaking: Replacement about $900

Rear cylinders: Roughly $300.

Quite the pretty penny. But, if I buy another old used car (can't afford much right now) who knows what problems that one would come with. So, I don't know if I should drive this until it can't and then scramble to find something else.. I'm even considering a 24 month lease. I know everyone seems to hate leasing, but it can be a suitable option for some. Either way, I'm lost at the moment. Thoughts?
