I have been working as a personal trainer for 7 years and I have never made more than 32k per year. I love my job and also have a YouTube channel with a 1,000 subscribers all about Fitness. I have multiple certifications and up until recently I thought of doing something different.
My wife and I just had our second child and my wife is a stay at home mom. It sucks to not be able to fully provide for my family the way I want to. We get government assistance like food stamps and Medicaid so that is very helpful but I know I dont want to take advantage of that forever. I guess my growing family is the main reason why I feel I need to do something that makes more.
One idea I came up with recently was to become a physical therapy assistant which takes about three years of school and because I dont make a lot financial aid is paying for pretty much everything. My pay would go from 30k to about 60k.
The challenges I have are getting out of debt and saving since i get paid so little. I hired a business coach for about 5k which I put on zero Interest credit cards. I got some good advice but he never really helped me make any sales. We are almost about to pay off my jeep Patriot (only $1,700 left). So my total debt is close to $6,700. I also want to save for retirement but it's just not going to happen as a personal trainer anytime soon.
I'm 27 years old and I've met a lot of 40 year old trainers working all day long doing split shifts and some trying to start there own businesses and failing at that also. Also many managers quit because they are pressured with unrealistic budgets and low pay. I dont want to be in there shoes and I know I need to change course quick.
Has anyone ever gone through what I'm going through? I honestly dont care about the line of work as much as I care about getting out of debt and saving for retirement. I went on Indeed and found some good jobs that would pay more than what I'm making now and feel tempted to jump on that asap but worried I wouldn't be able to afford college if I did that.
So my question would be should I go to school to do something like physical therapy assistant and stick with my current personal training job for the next three years or should I try to find some higher paying jobs right away which would most likely disqualify me from getting government assistance and make paying for college harder?
My skills are mostly in physical fitness, sales, customer service, and marketing. Any advice helps!
