I recently asked my mom for a picture of my social security card because I needed a photocopy to fill out forms for a new job. Although I'm moved out, she still keeps important documents in her fire-proof safe because it's just safer and easier. She went to look for my card and could not find it. I also had no clue where it was, so basically we decided it was lost. I told her I would look a little more and if I still couldn't find it, I'd start the process to get a new one.

About an hour later, she texts me saying she had to cancel the order for a new card because they wanted her to mail in my passport or driver's license along with some other info, and I have all those other documents with me so she could not complete it. I checked my email and see there was an order confirmation with a $46.99 charge and then an order cancellation. They did refund her the $46.99 after she canceled. She did not tell me she was doing this for me, and I didn't want her to, she just did it without my knowledge.

I informed her that I was already looking at the form I needed and was going to go to the SS office near me to get a new one, and it was absolutely free, NOT $46.99. Well, turns out she went to a random website thinking she could just order it online, and gave them all of my info including my SSN, address, name, phone number, and email. She also had to give her credit card AND her and my father's SSN. Obviously this was a scam, but I'm trying to figure out just how bad this is and any next steps I should take to protect myself.

The website she used was onlinefiler.org. Her justification was "it was a .org" site so I thought it was okay". The website is pretty sketchy and they obviously state they are not affiliated with any government entity, but pose themselves as a 3rd party to fill out the forms and speed up the process. Is there any chance that this would be legit and they won't be stealing my, my mom's and my dad's identity for the rest of our lives? Maybe they're just scamming people out of $47 to do something they could do for free?

Any advice on what I should do or info about this website would be really appreciated. My dad and I are kind of freaking out. Thank you!
