Hello all,
I am a 20 year old full-time college student entering year 3 with no debt or loans in my name due to receiving a generous scholarship. I am currently unemployed after my old serving job closed unexpectedly earlier this year and I've struggled to find suitable employment since. I've bounced through two jobs that I quit because they wouldn't accommodate my school schedule. I am applying to jobs but I have no reliable transportation and Lyft is exceedingly expense and the bus is inconvenient and often late. I want to buy a car so I can have a better selection of jobs and better work availability but I fear buying a car, gas, insurance and repair costs will blow out my savings and leave me broke. My credit score is 769 at the moment (want it at 800+ by graduation) and I have a goal to have 20k in savings by the time I graduate in May 2021. Thing is, the layoff and subsequent job failings have left me discouraged and depressed about my finances an I am finding it hard to get back to having a regular steady income. Any suggestions?
Income:
-$7,200 savings (was $15k at start of 2019)
-$80 checking
-$1,500-$3,000/semester excess financial aid from my scholarship
-$80-$100 paycheck coming from last job next Thursday
Bills (as of last week):
-$200 credit card balance (bill due 9/15; I plan on paying it in full)
-$40 phone bill
-$300-450 rent (I rent a room in someone's house bc I live in Denver and COL is high)
-$250 travel (no car; I have an RTD pass though school but use Lyft mostly bc the bus is always late)
-$200 food (can't cook because I have no stove/kitchen access)
-$30 subscriptions (netflix & kindle unlimited)
TLDR: Unemployed and I need to buy a car to open up my employment net before I squander my savings and go broke. I just really want to get my shit together and reach my 20k savings goal.
