I moved out of my apartment in Alabama about two weeks ago (Aug 6th) to move into my first house in a neighboring city. I checked the mail yesterday and saw that I had a bill for $2002.64 for the prorated 6 days of rent plus damages (which is after they deducted my $200 deposit from the total cost). My stomach dropped. I know that I want to dispute the charges, but don't really know how to go about doing so. I haven't yet communicated with the apartment manager in any way because I'm not sure what my first step should be. I can't find my lease (I still have moving boxes to go through) so I'm sure I need to ask to see their copy to see what it says I am liable for.
First, I lived in the apartment for nearly 3 years (10/16 - 8/19) so surely much of the repairs are due to normal wear and tear. Next, because I was out of town for the week leading up to my move out and I started work the following day, I had to move out all in one day (on a Sunday). So, I gave the apartment a cursory clean up, but definitely didn't get the bedroom carpet cleaned or spend the time needed to really scrub down the floors or countertops. GOD, I regret that now. I concede that. Also, I have had a dog for the last two years (which I paid $25 a month extra rent for), and she had previously caused two small holes in the drywall that I foolishly didn't repair. I would be completely fine conceding my $200 deposit and maybe a bit more, but $2000 is outrageous. Also, I never asked maintenance to repair a single thing for the entire time I moved there or caused them any expenses during my stay. Below is the list of charges they sent:
Replaced Damaged Floors / Carpet: $744.24
Replaced Damaged Vertical Blinds: $100
Damages to walls: $450
Prime Damaged Walls: $300
Stove, Refrig, D-washer, Counter tops, sink, floors, Bathroom: $310.00
Pet Odor Removed: $100
