TL; DR: can I use an angle grinder flap wheel for wood, when it is labeled for metal? Any standard drawbacks? Specifically floors.Hello! Not sure if I’ve ever posted here, but hello in any case. I live in a 150+ year old city rowhome and spend my weekends arguing with my husband about the best/least shitty way to DIY projects around the house. We are fairly knowledgeable, but not too skilled haha. Maybe in a new construction home where things are square and plumb we’d do better, but this crazy place is like a funhouse of smoke and mirrors and you never know what you’re gonna get when you peek behind the drywall.ANYWHO, we’re remodeling our second floor, and we exposed the subfloors, which in the 1800’s they just called “floors”. We like old things and patina, so we’re thinking sanding/patching and doing a linseed oil finish will be nice. We have this finish in other areas of our home, and really like it. A couple full boards have to be replaced, and there was a kooky plywood patch we already addressed, but otherwise they’re salvageable, no rot or stains or anything. The big barrier is sanding. You can’t belt sand these because the old forged nail heads rip up the belts. We have an oscillating palm sander, but I’d prefer to have this job done in less than a year.Long story long, I’ve used a flap wheel on my angle grinder before for a big ass slab of live edge wood I needed to get the trunk off of. That worked great. That was a tiny job compared to ~100 square feet of flooring (yes, still small, I know) and since the main goal was material removal, a 40 grit flap wheel chewed through it in the most satisfying and speedy way. Not thinking that’s a great plan of action for my floors, BUT, I found some higher grit flap wheels on the interwebs, and am tempted to order and use them for the job. Just concerned there’s some drawback to using tools for metal finishing on wood that I’m not forseeing. So far, I’ve read about coated sandpapers clogging with dust as one concern.
