Found a nice B&B operated by a retired couple in the Black Hills. Lots of good reviews online. Contacted them directly via their website and mailed a check with a one night deposit. Reviews go back before the time of AirBnB and some mention mailing in deposits. Yes, it's a risk, but an educated one, and saves the $39 AirBnB service fee.
Warning: Do not start calling up properties and offering to mail deposits. You absolutely can get taken advantage of. Websites such as AirBnB offer a layer of protection. Every situation is different, and I am okay with this particular situation.
