Over 10 years on Reddit and I've now just found this sub. Wish I'd known about it sooner.
I see a lot of posts about items that people have had for a few years or longer and how well it has survived time. Some have complained about these kinds of posts as I've noticed, and others see it as a testament to how well a product has endured for a period of time.
I was looking through some old photos the other day before backing them up to new hard drives, and I noticed that some of the things I saw in those photos (maybe eyeglasses, shoes, speakers, etc.) are still items that I have and use today. I don't baby my personal belongings, but I'm not extremely harsh or careless with them, either.
One surprising item is something I've replaced last year: my eyeglasses. My prescription hasn't changed much since 2007, but a pair of way overpriced Burberry eyeglasses I got back then survived and served me well until I bought a pair of Warby Parker glasses last year. So I think it's pretty obvious to everyone that a lot of things can be BIFL if you just take decent care of it.
So, I'd like to suggest that whenever someone posts an item that has survived a few years or a few decades on this sub, maybe include a paragraph about how you took care of it--if you took any care at all. If I see a jacket or a pair of boots on the sub and all it says is "This thing has lasted 20 years and is still kicking," I'd like to know as someone who might be considering those items whether you took special care of it or if you abused it. It makes a huge difference in knowing just how durable anything is. And it sure as hell helps to give would-be buyers of that item tips on making it last.
