For those of you who own Darn Tough socks or an equivalent brand (any person considering themselves to be a true BIFL-er does), washing merino wool socks with fabric softener I'm going to say is a bad move.
I have had issues with my socks smelling due to foot stench even after washing them once. Not only this, but they haven't been wicking moisture away from my feet since I first washed them. I have a habit of washing everything with fabric softener and I've noticed these socks don't take kindly to it.
Today as I go to wash them, I decide to completely soak them in water before I throw them in the wash and I'm finding that I have a hard time getting them to completely soak. I'm seriously running water over these socks, attempting to flood them, and water is flowing around and off of them.
After soaking these socks and washing them once without fabric softener, I notice they take water much better than they did before. I'm currently washing them a second time and I've yet to confirm they're as good as new, but that's my experience with it so far.
So, can anyone confirm this is the case? I read on Smartwool's website as well as another website dealing with merino shirts that fabric softener is bad for merino.
