I have a very expensive operation coming up for a chronic condition. I’m having the battery of a spinal cord stimulator replaced and my insurance is only covering 60%. When I originally had it put in, my employer at the Rome provided a really great insurance plan where they covered 80%. I’ve since changed jobs and I have to provide my own health insurance. My job doesn’t offer it. My out of pocket maximum is $7K. I will be asking for an itemized bill to catch any errors but what else can I do to lower these costs?

I make about $3200 a month. Rent is $990, I have about $11K in credit card debt (I foolishly put my previous medical bills on my credit card and yes I’m paying it off but it’s a huge burden and the dumbest thing I could have ever done). I also have a car payment of $250 a month. My health insurance premium is $430 a month. Those are my large monthly costs.

I was thinking of applying for financial assistance once the bills roll in but I’m worried that I won’t qualify due to my income. I will be switching to HMO during enrollment to at least help lower the premiums while I’m in this debt.

Any advice helps. I spent the afternoon crying my eyes out over this and even considered canceling my surgery and just remain miserable the rest of my life. I really need some advice. Thanks everyone.
