I've just run into this online shopping. My state (Colorado) has complicated sales tax with different rates depending where you live and shop. (state > county > city). This recent experience showed me you should know yours and make sure its accurate when you online shop.
The effective tax rate at my house is 4.5%.
For an online furniture order from a popular brick and mortar retailer I was charged $52.43 in tax.
4.5% of $699 is $31.46.
I was overcharged $20.98 in tax.
For another order I was charged $62.93 in tax.
4.5% of $839 is $37.76
I was overcharged $25.18 in tax.
Thats almost $50 in their favor. I've written an email to see if they'll issue a refund.
