I often find myself spending money through debit transactions and not actually realize how much I spend until I look at my statement and realize I could've spent my money a lot better. Currently I have a debit card and I set aside $100 each week from my paycheck into my savings account; however, I find myself more often than not transferring a couple hundred dollars to my spending every once in a while to break even. I feel like sometimes the expenses pile up and I have to transfer money from my savings to my checking account.
I will admit that I have a bad habit of eating out too often but with a baby and busy schedule it's a lot more convenient than cooking. Not to mention it's a guilty pleasure that I enjoy fast food or going out to eat. We usually go out to eat 3 or 4 times a week usually spending around $50.
Usually when the expenses pile up like for instance the car needs maintenance, I need to visit the doctor and the rent is due soon is when I transfer money over to my spending account. I mostly want to know how I can control myself from going out to eat or buying things that aren't really necessary and spend my money more wisely. I've thought about withdrawing my money as cash and separating it into what I plan on spending but honestly I have no idea if that would work. Plus the banks usually close by the time I'm home from work and ATM's only allow me a to withdraw a certain amount from my account.
