In a market where your service is a commodity with little differentiators, how do you end up in a profitable situation (or maybe even winner takes all) if there are already strong players in the market competing your margins away?
Even autonomous cars will not save the business case, it will be the same throat cutting competition until we are back to government regulated taxis.
I could see them being profitable if they cut all their R&D expenses, get rid of most of their engineers, and focus on operations. But even then, that would not meet their valuations just based on the nature of their market.
