I'm usually great with not buying unnecessary things, but I need to work on being frugal in other ways. Three tips that came from me being reckless or unplanned recently:

  1. Drive carefully and buy a dashcam. I consider myself an extremely safe driver, but I have a tendency to roll stop signs or only stop for less than a second because I have quick reflexes and can gauge the safety of a crossing without stopping entirely. I was stopped by a police officer for doing a rolling stop yesterday and my citation is $300--all because I didn't brake for an extra second. I'm bitter about it because I looked, even stopped a bit, and was completely safe, but I had rolled that stop at other times and ultimately deserved the ticket. I should've bought a dashcam earlier, though.

  2. Last week, I slipped and fell backwards on my head in my bathroom while standing on the towel I'd placed there, and had to see a doctor. I'd put a thin towel on the floor next to the shower instead of buying a $10 bathmat to save money. The doctor's visit cost more than $10, and I was lucky I didn't need a CT scan.

  3. On a recent trip, I used Uber/Lyft a few times instead of walking or using public transport because I was in a hurry and it was the fastest option. If I'd planned my time more efficiently, I would've saved about $15-30 from not needing to do that.

tl;dr don't skimp on safety, plan well, and buy things that'll save you money in the event of a catastrophe or in the long run
