I have a hard time decoding the marketing wank around these types of shoes -- according to reviews $150 seems to buy you either a nice designer you'll need to chuck and replace in 6 months and I can't figure out how to find the one offering that will actually last for 10 years. One guy says "I've had my Clarks for 5 years" which sounds all well until you look at recent reviews of Clark shoes which show they stopped stitching the leather and rely only on glue now, so the shoes fail after lite use. My current MO is to buy clearance shoes from my local shoe-stores (usually $20-30 for pairs of good looking shoes that last me 6-12 months and then wear through)

I'd love to find one good pair of shoes, and based on my habits, a pair of good thick-leather durable chukkas would fit the bill (ideally with replaceable soles, i.e. Good Year Welted). I prefer completely flat insoles -- I've got really strong, dexterous feet, so any arch-support is only going to get in my way/force me to put weight where I don't want to. I'm happy to spend a bit ($2-300) if I knew I was buying shoes that would last 10 years of daily use.
