Parents are of retirement age, both living in Colorado, USA, and mom has initiated a separation, but doesn't want to go through the legal hassle of a divorce. They have been living separately for months and are in the process of selling their house. She wants to pay off all of their debts using cash from the house sale, split the remaining money 50/50 and go their separate ways.

Unfortunately dad is the type who will try to take advantage and get as much as he can from her. Her assets will include, cash from house sale, retirement income, and eventually inheritance from her parents.

Looking for advice on how to navigate this situation. In particular, are there reliable ways to protect her finances? Should she just get a divorce?

Thanks in advance!
