My former employer just sent me a check cashing out my 401(k) there. I stopped working there in Mar 2017, and moved to Canada in Apr 2018. I tried to have this money transferred to an IRA, but I couldn't find an IRA fund that would touch me because I was a non-resident at this point. I had intended to figure the situation out, but I hadn't gotten to it yet. One day, a check came in the mail with the balance of my 401(k) account. I had not requested this. Can they do this? Am I going to have to pay the tax penalites on this?
