So our company’s fiscal year end is in June, which is around the time that they do promotions and pay increases. I am currently making $60k a year, but I work crazy hours (8AM-7PM at times) and also weekends. I found out, through my manager, that the person that is above me is leaving which leaves just my manager and I. My manager said that my coworker leaving was confidential and to not say anything.

So here is were I need some advice. I know that all the work that my coworker used to do will now fall on my boss and I, which means shittier hours coming up. I know that they are going to promote me to the next level, but I am concerned that the pay increase will be to 70-75k at tops. How do I negotiate a pay increase to $85k? I can’t bring up the fact that my coworker is leaving as this would breach the confidence bestowed by my manager. At the same time I don’t think making 70-75k and doing the work of two people is fair either. I was considering going in with a letter of resignation and quitting if they don’t give me the $85k, but that seems a bit dramatic. Any advice would help!

Quick edit: I know they are looking to replace my coworker but my manager said it is very hard to find a qualified person. So if I quit they would not be able to easily replace me.
