Our house is a '67 raised ranch, split entry and we've owned it for 19 years. The floor is oak hardwood over 1/4" subfloor (yes, the builder cheaped out - there's 5 homes built at the same time, all with the same 1/4" subfloor and we are the Squeaky Floor Brotherhood)I was first trying to locate the joists for a potential project involving the dining & living room and then I got curious and am trying to understand what's going on.I'm sure most my questions are obvious so bear with me.I've attached the original drawings for the joists and floorplan to give you an idea of the area I'm talking about (the area in question is basically the far left of the house (dining room & living room) in an "L" shape). http://bit.ly/2DW5erm bought a stud finder with a deep scan feature.IN the living room, starting from the right (next to the entrance stairs) and bottom, I was happily finding joists roughly 16 on center, all lining up nicely until I got about 2.5' from the kitchen wall. The readings were all messed up and at 1.5' and closer, all the readings were 1.5" to the left from where I expected them to be.I went over to the dining room, starting at the shared wall with the kitchen and those joists were also out of alignment. I went over to the far left, dining room exterior wall to scan out from there, found one joist 10" from the wall, the next 14.5" and from then on, they were 16 on center (but still offset from the living room ones).I spent a stupid amount of time scanning those joists over and over. Was convinced there was something going on with the scanner, that maybe the calibration was messed up. I dug up the construction drawings and all the joists looked straight on it.I realized there was a base vent on the far end of the dining room, pulled it up, poked around and found a joist, right where the scanner said it would be (and off of the living room one by 1.5").I'll admit I get really stupidly dense when I'm convinced of certain facts.I'ts now occurred to me that maybe they put in sistered joists instead of the long single ones shown on the drawing. Does that sound right? I measured to the center (14') and that's where the "misalignment" happens. I really am dumb sometimes. If they are sistered, how much of an overlap would there be? The scanner is really erratic within a half foot of the center. Can anyone helps me understand the weird spacing on the far left joists in the dining room (10" 14.5" and then 16 on center). The drawings show all 16 on center. I'm developing trust issues with those drawings though. via /r/DIY http://bit.ly/2WxYN53
