Following the ten minute rule has exponentially helped my mental health. I struggle with depression, and a big way that shows up is lack of motivation to clean and purge. I'm a neat freak and really dislike germs, so it's a downward spiral when I can't maintain my own standards. It's the main reason I am pursuing simple living. The less I have to maintain, the less overwhelming it is to maintain. If I can tell myself, "just tidy for ten minutes," I often end up with the motivation to continue for longer.

The rule has also helped me simplify my cleaning tools and potions by realizing how little I actually need. The majority of cleaning is done with diluted dawn and vinegar (I occasionally throw bleach on the dumpster fire that is the boys' bathroom).

It's a simple thing but it has helped me so much, thought I'd share. It's helpful in other areas too, cleaning is just my biggest struggle.

Edit: this is not my original idea, but I can’t remember where I got it from.
