Hey folks, I know there are lots of ways things can get hacked, but in this case, (creepy AF), I believe this happened in person.
On Monday night I went to a DJ night at a local bar, and while there I met a random guy, he seemed cool, we were having a good convo...I needed to head home to take care of my dog and only live a few blocks away, so I invited him over to hang out and have a beer. I’m a woman and I live alone, and I have a bad habit of being too friendly when I’m drunk—-after that night it isn’t a mistake I’ll make again.
Basically I vaguely remember walking home, and pretty immediately passing out in my bed. It’s occurred to me after the fact that he could have put something in my drink back at the bar, because I was pretty lit, but falling asleep with a total stranger in my house is fucking ridiculous. But I really don’t know.
Anyway, I got an email from Venmo yesterday, which confirmed 4 Venmo transactions early Tuesday morning, first one around 2am and final one around 4am. The total is about $700. My first thought was that it was a remote hack, but the recipient on the Venmo app was a guy I don’t know, who lives in the same city as me, doesn’t have any pics, but I’m pretty sure it’s the same dude, because it was the period of time when he would’ve been in my house while I was asleep, and my Venmo randomly being hacked to randomly send money to the same dude in my city 4 times while a random dude from my city happens to be in my house....doubt it.
I’ve already had him 86ed from the bar I met him at, reported everything to Venmo, notified my bank, and changed my locks and account/card numbers. Other than being MASSIVELY FUCKING CREEPED OUT, I’m wondering how the hell he did this. My phone has a code lock, my phone screentime app doesn’t show Venmo being used that night, I never got any texts from Venmo (unless he deleted them, but I also checked the Verizon record and didn’t see any), my computer has never been logged into Venmo, and I don’t have Venmo text transactions set up. Anyone have an idea how this could’ve been done?
*if this isn’t a good sub for this question, let me know where I should post instead!
