Have you ever tried simplifying your romantic relationships and boiling them down to the essentials?
I did some introspection when I was single the last time around. I found that for me the core of romantic relationship is about connection, intimacy, affection and enjoying each others company rather than combining two lives into one. I'm against having children, uninterested in marriage and ambivalent about living together. Autonomy, fun and romance are important to me. My partner must first and foremost be my lover.
I find relationships of this type to be very simple and easygoing. They don't add any unnecessary complications or stress to my life.
The concept of a relationship escalator is very useful. It shows that not all romantic relationships have to fit the same mold. You and your partner can pick and choose the parts you enjoy and that fit your view of a simpler life.
