My doctor ordered a gall bladder ultrasound to see if it'full of sludge. Of course he sent the order to our local hospital, which owns the clinic that I visited. Scheduling called me last week a d we set a date. They told me billing would call later to get insurance info. I got the call this afternoon. After a lot of pleasantries she started telling me what she needed. I interrupted and asked for the costs. She told me that I hadn't paid up my deductible so I would be billed $400 but there was a 10% discount if I paid the day of the scan. I thought that sounded high and I asked if that was the best price. She said yes. I said I needed to look further. She asked what I was going to do. I told her I had a friend who's a veterinarian and I would call him a d see what he could do. I was actually hear her gulp before I hung up. Then I called a stand-alone imaging center. They gave me a quote of $100 out the door. They won't file my insurance but hey, I'm saving $300. My point is to think and check your options. I am a nurse and heard one of my patients report having done this and I tried it too.
