Hey, everyone! I need a little advice about a zombie "debt". I put the word debt in quotations because there isn't actually a debt, but my former university sure does think there is. Here's the breakdown:

I attended East Carolina University for one semester in 2005, paid in full. Because of some personal health issues, I decided I'd like to go to school closer to home and withdrew from ECU prior to the deadline before the holiday break (meaning I completed the fall semester in full, but withdrew for the spring semester).

Several years went by, and suddenly I began receiving letters from a debt collector stating that I owed ECU almost $3900. I immediately contacted the debt collector and was told that I owed money for a second semester. I disputed it with the debt collector and the school, showing proof that I had withdrawn prior to the deadline and owed nothing on the account. The debt collector agreed with me, and the "debt" was closed. Or so I thought.

Now, almost eight or nine years later, I've received a new letter from the same debt collector saying that I still owe this $3900 (and likely whatever fun fees and interest they'd like to tack on). My first instinct is to just ignore them at this point. It's past the statute of limitations for them to sue me, and it's well past the point where it would have fallen off my credit report.

However, I was wondering what everyone else would do in my position? Do I hash it out yet again with the same debt collector and hope this time it sticks? I definitely don't have that withdrawal fax anymore, and I can't imagine ECU still having it 14 years later. So this would make it harder for me to plead my case this time around. Do I just ignore it? Do I pay even though I don't owe anything to hopefully get this off of me once and for all? Thoughts? Thanks in advance!
