Today, my 93 year old grandmother with dementia received a call from her “nephew” saying he was in trouble and needed money. My uncle (lives with her to help look after) overhears her talking to somebody and was a bit confused as to who it was. He walks out and sees her with her credit card in hand ready to read it off. He asks her, she says [nephew’s name] is in trouble and needs $4,000 immediately. My uncle (father to her nephew) asks to talk to him, and he hears the person on the other side telling my grandmother not to pass the phone. My uncle snatched it and hung up.

She was very lucky that my uncle overheard her talking and got to the phone in time. I can only imagine how often this happens and the scammer/criminal gets away with it.

Now, the rest of the family is talking about things to do to prevent my grandmother from future situations.

Hopefully this can help others with family members in similar situations get ahead of a potential problem.

We are calling the bank to lower her daily spending limit on her cards.

We are unplugging the landline since anyone my grandmother needs to talk to has her cell phone.

If there is anything else that might help, please chime in. Thank you.
