Instead of having a monthly budget for food, I keep a list of food that we end up wasting. After a couple months, I can say that we have brought down our food waste to almost zero by purchasing less. Let a few avocados go to waste this month? Only buy the quantity you think you can finish next time. The money that we spend on food we end up eating is not wasted, but the food end up in compost. We also pair it with emptying our fridge and pantry as most as possible before restocking. I used to have a stuffed fridge and didn't know what we should finish first. By having a less full fridge, we have to be more creative and it's not the end of world if we lack one or two ingredients for a dish.
The way I logged it is “wasted one avocado from a pack of four", so solution should be buy three the most at a time next time.
