I'm in my mid 30's and I've had a low-income my entire life. When I have money I feel deprived if I don't spend it. I got a seasonal job to save more so In the past, I would have about $100 a month for personal expenses, now it's about $600. But I spend most of it. The $ is also inconsistent I worked for 7 months last year.
I saved 3k last year but spent most of it in between jobs on housing and food (I didn't plan very well). This season earned less and I saved nothing. With the exception of $$$$ food (rural area w no car) and a couple of small bills $30 internet, $50 phone I could save about $450 - $600 a month. But every time I try to budget I find myself buying something.
I don't have any subscriptions, I buy almost everything used and I choose reusable items over disposables. I don't drive, I think about things I can do to save $ and choose them by default but I can't seem to just keep $ in the bank.
My boyfriend is also a big spender but is better at saving than I am and he has offered to hold on to my checks for safe keeping. Last year the 3k I saved was from old checks I never cashed. I recently canceled my direct deposit in hopes I could repeat my success.
Any tips for me? I come from a long line of $ wasters and would like to break the cycle. Thank you
