So long story short, I woke up in a hospital- apparently I had food poisoning to such an extent that I puked and passed out- 911 took me to the nearest hospital. This was my first time ever being in a hospital in my 27 years on this earth. Nevertheless, I was sweating the bill since I have a HDHP, deductible being $2,800.

I received the hospital ER bill today -$4800 for 3 hours in ER!! At the bottom of the bill, there is a row for “insurance adjustments” which is 0( hospital didn’t have my insurance information and didn’t ask for it before they discharged me). Below that is another option called patient adjustments/ payments and there is a discount of 75% in there. So my net payable is $1,200. Since this is all new to me, I would appreciate if y’all can help me with the following questions in my mind.

  • why was there an automatic discount?
  • should I involve insurance co now or no point?
  • if I get insurance co involved, is there a chance that they might take away the automatic discount they gave?

Any other advice on what to do?
