This time of year many grocery stores run special deals on hams. The better half picked up one of those on his way home. What the store circular hadn't mentioned (and he hadn't noticed) is that the manufacturer was increasing the weight by adding a package of glaze.
Since we already had it home and weren't going to return the ham I weighed that glaze on our kitchen scale: 8.25 oz. We were paying the price of meat for more than half a pound of an item whose three top ingredients were corn syrup, sugar, and water.
Although it's not that great a loss to us, there are people out there who need to watch every penny. Posting here as a heads up: examine this type of deal before taking it to the register. Last year at Thanksgiving we saw a similar trick to increase the weight of a packaged turkey roll by including gravy. The manufacturer of today's ham was Smithfield.
