I cut a big plastic bottle - so that the top is about 1/3 the height. I pulled a strip of old sheet through the mouth so that when I put the top upside down into the bottle, the sheet strip reaches the bottom and the top sits in, like a funnel.
There's some water and a drop of seaweed fertiliser in the bottom.
I've replanted a pot of supermarket basil into the top half - with just enough extra seed compost to fill it - and put it on a sunny window sill.
The basil is flourishing. I harvest leaves off each stalk and leave some big leaves to keep it growing strong and it has lots of new leaves budding out at the bracks with the main stalks. Best of all, it kept going when I was away recently. I really think this will last the whole summer.
The bottle is clear so I can see the root system growing down the sheet strip. There's a little green algae in thye bottom - which is fine by me. I water it by emptying any glasses before I wash them - frugally as our water is metered!
