I currently have an offer for a federal position that I am very interested in.
I just want to make sure it makes sense to double my commute.
Current Job:
- 31mi one way, rural area
- 8-5pm schedule, firm, M-F
- $33k a year, overtime allowed
- 401k with 3% company match, health, dental, life
- PTO - 3 weeks, accrues annually
- Maternity Leave
- Great atmosphere, stable job, not much room for growth up
- Company is under 10 years old, has done layofffs once before
New Job Opportunity:
- 66mi one way, through high rush hour traffic area known for delays and misery
- flexible schedule, M-F, able to avoid rush hour. 7-3pm is probably going to be the schedule
- $50k starting salary, overtime allowed
- All those fed gov benefits like TSP, etc etc (you all will prob know their value better than I)
- Sick time, Personal Leave separate, no accrual cap, accrue 4hrs per pay period each
- No maternity leave program, but combination of personal/sick/approved leave and leave without pay to cover it
- Rumor is, lots growth potential, with promotion schedules
I currently drive a 13yr old Hyundai with under 150k miles on it, but its not the most fuel efficient, and its starting to slowly need repairs. Around 23mpg. So if I double my commute, its possible that I need to upgrade to a new car (to get the 0% interest, and warranty) that has double the fuel efficiency. Not driving a Prius people, just stating that now. But looking at the Hyundai Ioniq and other things.
I also plan to have children in the next 3-5 years, which is why I mentioned maternity leave.
I think this job change makes sense, but I just want that confirmation to make sure I am looking at it all clearly. What does everyone think?
Edit - Moving is not an option.
