A few years back, in 2016, I made an appointment with a recommended psychiatrist but he was so booked out, I ended up cancelling the appointment to get something sooner. I had already filled out the patient information online with my insurance and SSN. I started getting letters from his office to collect a no show fee and I would call the office to correct this, seeing as how I cancelled the appointment on time. They would say they would fix it but it never got resolved. Now it’s on my credit report and I got a collections letter. Now this doctor’s office is CLOSED. I requested a debt validation from the agency and of course they validated it, they just have a typed piece of paper saying I owe the money.
What do I do now? I do not want to pay this. It’s not much but I was in a bad car accident a couple months ago and every $100 counts. I feel like this is a serious violation of my health information that a doctor I never saw and whom I cancelled on time with is hitting my credit score using my SSN that I only included on health paperwork due to necessity.
Also, this might be crazy, but I could not track this doctor down to ask him if he was able to correct this-but I finally did-he moved to Wisconsin and practices there. Would it be crazy to contact him now? I only realized he was there after his doximity page suddenly updated his offices to include this state, then it was a quick google. For a long time, I assumed he was retired. I assume this creates an extra wrinkle. I’m in NJ, he was practicing originally in NY, and now he’s in WI.
