Hey there everyone,
I‘ve read a bit on this sub and it seems to be very much centered around America and the American financial situation. Makes sense with a lot of American users. Sadly, your tips help (me at least) next to nothing because I have no idea how a given example would play out in Europe. For example student loans, medical bills and rent seem to be much less of a problem here, as well as the spending culture in general, like eating out.
This is my second account because I will share my financial situation with you guys, which I wouldn‘t be comfortable with doing with any personal information from my main account attached.
Here‘s my situation: I‘m a university student going for a bachelors degree and I live with two flatmates in a small city (around 150k people) in a western European country. My monthly „income“ is 800€ that I get from my parents (so I have a net income of around 10k€ annually). I know I‘m incredibly lucky to receive this money and support, so I‘m not here to complain. My point is that I‘ve seen people say that living off of 30k a year is hard, which made me think about the differences in our ways of living, because here in Europe, it seems to be very different.
My monthly expenses are: Rent for 300€, food for 150€, electricity, phone, internet, taxes, medical insurance around 70€. So every month, I spend around 520€.
Per semester I have to pay around 400€ to my university, averaging out to about 70€ monthly.
That means I could, if I never needed to buy anything other than food and pay my monthly expenses, live off 7k per year.
I eat out maybe once a month, because it costs about 10 times as much as it does to cook for the day.
How would my situation play out in America? Living in a small-ish city, paying everything that is required, living with two flatmates, going to uni for a degree.
I‘d be happy to talk about the differences in living and saving here in Europe compared to America, but I‘d be even more happy to hear how this situation would play out in America.
