I realize I'm really dependent on my car for almost no reason. I live about 2.5 miles from my work and 1.5 miles from a grocery store in a relatively suburban area that's somewhat biker friendly. I rode my bike to work a couple times, but my problem is:
- I get insanely hot and sweaty regardless of the weather. I work in an office, so this is a problem when I show up already drenched.
- I have no storage space, I normally wear a backpack but get confused with being a college student (I live near a huge campus) and my center of balance is thrown off
- Wearing dresses/skirts/shoes that have heels gets complicated and cumbersome
I have a few options:
- An electric bike: rather expensive, but looks the most "normal" in terms of keeping my reputation in a small town
- An electric scooter: looks a little bit weird, kinda like I'm 12 again, but pretty affordable and very portable
- Roller blades: the most affordable, plus I also have the ability to ride on the sidewalk instead of in the road. Probably strange to see someone roller blade in professional attire, but it's also fun as fuck. However, I'm worried I wouldn't be able to stop for traffic and I can easily see myself wiping out already.
- Electric unicycle (which is totally a thing): if you're going to be unconventional, you might as well go all out?
- Straight up hoverboard: I can be the envy of all the preteens in my neighborhood.
Anyone else ditch their car for something unconventional? I'd love for you to weigh in on this!
