2 months ago I posted about how I received a summons for small claims court for an outstanding debt ($800 of which I had been actively paying on).
I read everyone’s advice and then I combined that with my initial plan. I wanted to share what I did in case someone else runs into the same bull crap.
-
I collected/organized all of my records.
-
I wrote a lengthy letter to the court detailing the history of the debt and what I’ve been continuing to do to resolve it. I submitted a summary of all my records along with the statement.
-
I continued to make my monthly payments over the past two months to the debt collector. sorry girl, nice try, and bye.
-
I wrote a complaint to the company where the debt originated from and got a response form top tier management of the company. They still suck but at least acknowledged that they suck.
-
I filed a complaint with my state against the constable who served me because they were awful/unprofessional/and most importantly caused this whole ordeal to drag out further.
Results:
-
The court sided with me and agreed to my suggested resolution. So basically they’re going to let me continue doing what I was doing in the first place which was paying the bill off with monthly installments. debt collector paid the court fee and sent me a written apology with an adjusted balance.
-
I’ve already paid down half of the balance and plan to finishing paying this off by the end of June.
Thank you for all of the initial feedback. I’m glad I mustered up the fight to resolve this tiny financial burden.
