I recently got a new bank (Bunq) which let’s you create multiple accounts within your bank account to facilitate better personal budgeting. Coming from a single account lifestyle, I started trying my best in budgeting myself (accounts for groceries, savings, rent, etc.). I like developing little systems for myself to improve aspects of my life, so this came in naturally and it felt like a little personal financial revolution. However, basically lacking financial knowledge, I wonder how to formulate real goals for my personal finances. That’s why I thought I can take it to Reddit. What are your personal goals when it comes to planning your own money management? What should I aim for? What are rules worth following? Or, Excel spreadsheets worth creating?

For context: I am really new to finance, I basically always lived in the moment with my money, always on the edge of having nothing left; if you haven’t guessed yet, I am fairly young. I do have a job with fluctuating income. I live with my girlfriend and we share groceries and other housely things. My goal is not to necessarily save money or overcome debt (fortunatley, I do not have any debt), but to develop an understanding of what it takes to have everything personal finance under control.
