My husband and I filed our joint 2018 tax return the first week of February. We received an email the same day saying that the return was accepted, and we are expecting a refund.

This morning he went to the IRS website to check the status of our refund, since after about 5 weeks we still haven’t received the refund. There was a message saying that the IRS made changes to our refund. The refund was cut by almost $2000. We have to call them to find out the details, but that we should expect the return by March 18. Husband is going to try to find time to call them later today.

My question is, is this normal? Or common? We have always filed our taxes jointly since 2010. Always received a refund and usually within 2 weeks. Never had any issues. We used H&R Block this year to file. We have used them in the past with no issues. Nothing like this has happened before so I’m just confused. Any advise or info is appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: after speaking to someone from the IRS, they told us it has to do with overpayment into Social Security and Railroad retirement (husband is railroad employee). The return we filed states that we “overpaid” into SS/RRR but we need to submit proof of that. They need us to mail them a copy of W-2’s to resolve this. Unfortunately we can’t do anything until April, and it may take months before it’s corrected. Lovely. At least it’s nothing we did wrong, according to them.

Thanks for the feedback!
