Recently I bought a pretty old house in Nova Scotia. Its around 180 years old give a few. Its beautiful. All timber framed with huge beams running through it. Amazing wooden flooring upstairs. Stairs so steep you cant help but wonder when exactly you're finally going to make a wrong move and break your neck.As I mentioned, upstairs has some amazing floors. Downstairs not so much. Its cheap laminate the previous previous owner put down. I found myself wondering what exactly is underneath. Now, I'm the kind of person who, after few drinks in, will bust out the pry bar and try to figure out exactly whats going on. Its how I found the cedar shake beneath the old vinyl siding. I'm a little afraid to try with the downstairs. I don't want to run perfectly good, if somewhat ugly, laminate. I'm not rich. I went down into the basement to see if I could figure out what exactly was going on. The subfloor is all old wide planks. At least 7 inches. That got me thinking. If I get a little to tipsy and end up ripping up my floor only to discover nothing at all, is it possible to refinish the subfloor. Sand it down and stain it. Fill the gaps with rope. Is this a thing. If it is, what do I do to go about making it work. Thanks for any tips and advice even if its letting me know that I'm an idiot! via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2XCij1s
