Hello All! So my father passed away suddenly last week, and while the whirlwind of emotions has been a big hurdle to jump I am lucky to have a wonderfully supportive family. I’m his only child and he raised me on his own, so while my family has been helpful, it has been one of those things where no one really has any advice for me.

Financially I know my father was pretty in debt, looking over his credit card statements and bank statements made it pretty apparent how hard up he was. Also I am fairly certain he had no life insurance since he had all the paperwork filled out to get enrolled, but...he has the paperwork and not the insurance company. At 27 years old, I am just starting to get a good handle on my finances, digging myself out of debt one payment at a time but there are so many different facets to this, and I am worried about being ruined financially since I know for a fact that he owed the IRS over 17k, his most recent credit card statement had an outstanding balance of 2k, and he didn’t really have any savings. Also, I live in Washington whereas he was living in Denver, making this that much more difficult because I only have until Friday to sort out anything that might need me present in the state. What do, reddit? I’m honestly at a loss on how to move forward, and with only so much time to get everything sorted, I am worried that I am going to mess something up and be on the hook for more than I can handle. I know I need to get a copy of his death certificate, which I am getting today from the mortuary, and that I need to call the credit card companies and his bank to let them know he’s passed, but from there I have no clue. Any advice would be appreciated!

Edit: Sorry for formatting, on mobile.
