So I decided to get a flock of chicken. There's only one problem - the missus is not exactly thrilled at the idea of keeping livestock. So I had two options:Direct assault - tell her I want chickens and get the chickens. (Yeah, riiight. That would go down well)Mission "Flying below the radar" - smuggle in some fertile eggs, build an incubator and hatch the chicks out in the basement. Present fluffy chicks to the wife and bank on the cuteness factor to work in my favor. So, as any sane Maker, I opted for option #2.I grabbed an old foam cooler, a seed starting warmer, a 20W light bulb and an 80mm PWM PC fan. Some plexiglass for a window and some stone pebbles to act as heat sinks. Then I printed me a 10 slot egg turner. I ended up designing my own, using this one:https://ift.tt/2UZtmjm for inspiration. Finally, I grabbed a Sonoff TH10, flashed it with Tasmota, hooked the fan and egg turner servo up to the GPIO's, the light bulb and seed heater to the Sonoffs 230V output (in parallel) and dropped a water container with some sponges in there as well to manage humidity. This is the end result: https://twitter.com/letmeimprovetht/status/1110409213166145536?s=20At this point I set up some rules in my Node Red that's running the rest of my house and this is what I ended up with:Keeps temps nice and stableThe backend looks a bit messier:Might not look pretty but does what it's supposed toI'm 6 days into the incubation, will be candling the eggs tomorrow to see if I'm on the right track. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2TvEtix
