Anyone who has ever tried to create something on a computer knows good software is usually very expensive. Like very, very expensive. If you want to edit videos professionally you usually want Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Photoshop. And as there is no video editing package, you'd have to buy either these 3 individual apps, for a total of $63 a month, or all apps, for $53 a month. Microsoft offers a bit more reasonable pricing, $60 a year, or $5 a month, for all of their apps, or a one-time $120 purchase for lifetime word, powerpoint and excel. But it's still not cheap, especially for something as basic as editing text, spreadsheets, and presentations. That's why I've been using only free, and preferably open-source, programs for the past few months. Here is a list of programs I've collected.

Almost all of these software are open-source. Not all of these are available for mac sadly :(

Photo Editing:

Gimp - Free open source photoshop alternative

Paint.net - A free open source light-weight photo editor. It doesn't have very many features, but it's good for quick editing. It's like a professional microsoft paint. The windows store version costs money but you can get it for free on their website

Inkscape - Free open source illustrator alternative

Darktable - Free open source lightroom alternative

Video/audio editing/recording/player / animation:

Audacity - Free open source professional audio editor

Blender - Free and powerful open source 3d modelling/animating software

Bosca Ceoil - Free and open source chiptune editor

DaVinci Resolve - Free Hollywood-grade video editor (sadly there are no real open source video editors :( so this one is closed-source)

FontForge - Free open source font editor

Pivot Animator - Free stick figure animator. Not open source and not really useful but still fun to mess around with.

OBS - Free open source screen recorder, no watermark/restrictions.

VLC media player - Free open source media player that plays almost all types of video and audio.

Pencil2d - Free open source 2d frame-by-frame animation

Text/Code/Presentation/Spreadsheet Editor

LibreOffice - Free open source microsoft office alternative. Has paint, word, excel, powerpoint, access (database editor), and formula editor.

Notepad++ - Free open source lightweight text/code editor.

Tex Studio - Free open source LaTeX editor.

Pycharm community edition - Free and very powerful python ide. Not open source.

Scribus - Free version of microsoft publisher

Other:

7zip - Free open source alternative to winrar. Extracts and creates zip files

Space Engine - Free space simulator. Not open source. Requires a very powerful computer.

BrickLink Studio - Free lego simulator

By the way fuck adobe. You already have to pay $636 a year to use their software, and even then you still have to pay an additional $360 dollars a year to get access to 10 free images a month. That's right, 360 dollars for 10 images a month. Adobe is like the EA of software. Adobe is a shitty fucking company that should just fuck of really. The only reason I still have adobe on my computer is because of adobe flash player, once that dies out and gets replaced by html5 I'll be happy to delete the last adobe program I have and finally totally stop using their software.
