[ELI5] How did people lose their retirement funds during the Great Recession and what can I do to prevent this from happening to me in the event of another recession?

Just recently watched The Big Short and am still in awe as to how nobody was prosecuted during this debacle. The part I’m still trying to grasp is how did people actually lose their retirement savings during this? Was it mainly just the people that bought homes they couldn’t afford that lost their savings or did it affect the general population as a whole?
