Hamermesh describes how greater wealth makes us feel busier, since it takes time to spend money. The ability to spend money on nice things and the availability of those things means that we have more demands on our time. Money doesn't actually free us from much of the time we would otherwise spend on chores and household work, since most personal work is not something that you can outsource (for instance, you can't pay someone to sleep or eat or read for you). Instead, our affluence leads to too many options and not enough time to pursue them.
