I am unable to go to the area I will move to at the moment but want to buy a house if I find one I like so I can start making payments. I've found a couple on realtor.com and clicked on the "I'm interested" button. A couple hours later, a guy named Rick emailed me and said he wasn't the Seller's realtor, but a third party one. That sounds fishy to me but again, first time buyer so it may be normal. He asked what I wanted to know about the house. I told him I'd like more pictures, info, etc. No problem.

A couple days later, I want the house even more now. He explains to me the process of buying a house since it's my first time and it's all very daunting. One of the things he mentioned, was Earnest money. He said it shows the seller I'm serious and also reimburses the seller for their wasted time if I change my mind and don't want the house. He said the Earnest money would be wired to a trust account and held there till the buying process is over and would be contributed to a down payment and/or closing costs.

Is all of this legit? To me, it sounds like one of the Craigslist scams where you pay the money for a product, they say they've shipped it, but then it never comes. Any advice is appreciated.
