For a few years I worked for the largest publicly owned solar company, SolarCity, which was then bought out by Tesla. I left Tesla to work at the largest privately owned Solar company in the US. After a few years in, Last month I left the industry.
Typically friends and family and Co-workers all ask me the same thing. "does going solar actually save money", "is it actually free" ect. There is so much more to the answer then a simple yes or no. Otherwise this would be the thread.
I was thinking about doing a guide for /r/personalfinance and breaking down my true thoughts and opinions on if it makes financial sense, and ways to get the best deal, and ways to avoid getting swindled, if your a good fit, and tips and tricks which could legit save you thousands if you pursue solar (fml I sound like a buzz feed article).
Is this something that you guys would be interested in? It would definitely be a long post though as there's a lot to say about solar. Would you want me to start off super laymen style for people who know nothing about solar? Or assume a general understanding?
I'm cringing at what I'm about to say, but it's the only way to actually gauge interest. If it's something that you would be interested in me making, up-vote the thread and leave a comment as to what particular aspect you want me to hit on. If it's something that you think would be a disservice, or add no value, downvote the thread. I don't care about karma, but I also don't want to spend 2 hours typing it all out if only 2 people are interested in it lol. At that point I'd rather just help them specifically.
If people are interested, then I'll post the thread in 24 hours.
Edit: well, fuckin A. This blew up wayyy faster then I expected. 50 up votes was my magical number where I would write up the thread on it. And we hit that within 30 minutes, So I will be writing it tonight. And will probably post in the morning.
Edit2: yep. I'm going to regret this.
Edit3: alright I've been trying to respond to every unique comment but I'm becoming a little overloaded and do have to work. I will refer back to this thread as I make the new one, and will try to answer some questions here and there but honestly won't make it to even half of them.
