I've lived in a six bedroom, ~1,500 sqft apartment, with five other college students in Boston since September. Our utilities have seemed abnormally high since we moved in, but we were unsure since the increases each month followed an expected upward trend with the change in weather. This month we were charged nearly $800 for an apparent whopping 3,357 kWh in February. Not to mention the gas bill we're expecting to be ~$400 this month if it continues on its similar trend upwards. The apartment is certainly poorly insulated but this usage seems almost impossible. We leave the heat on 65 and take care to turn the lights off, etc. To make it even more apparent there is an issue here, one of the kids living in the apartment upstairs (EIGHT TENANTS) informed us they pay "$20-$40" a month for electricity. The worst part is I'm not sure if he meant total or per person because if we have gas heating (not sure; going to check when I get home) $40 would actually MAKE SENSE. Otherwise, why the hell would the gas bill be going up too? Wtf is going on here? Possible cross metering? I find it hard to believe something in the apartment could be eating up that much energy otherwise. Every other friend I've spoken to with similar size apartments is burning through 600 kWh or so. Rent is downright criminal as is, with this on top of it we're getting assaulted monthly out here.
