I seem to spend around £30 on electric per month and £20 on gas (for water and heating). I have a small apartment and live on my own, but I also work from home, so I'm using both continuously, but I still think I'm paying very little, and my house is always warm!

I had smart meters installed recently, and a couple of days later a man from Utilita came round trying to get me to change to their supply (I know it's from the same 'wholesaler'). He told me their service is pretty much the same, but there is no standing charges for the services, which I'm told was for meter reading etc.

I said I would check into it before I signed anything, but I want to do research - standing charges have always irked me with electric/gas, and if there was an opportunity not to pay them I would. Can anyone clear this up - are there any other suppliers that do this, and is the BG standing charge thing really necessary, or are they just adding it on now for the sake of more money.
